Blue Monday 2021

January 2021

Blue Monday is a term used for the third Monday of January. In 2021, Blue Monday falls on Monday, January 18th. It is a time of the year, following the holiday season, when the Winter Blues can be at an all-time high. The holiday season has come and gone, days are short and cold, and bills are adding up from Christmas shopping. Although Blue Monday is not scientifically the most blue or depressing day of the year, the day brings awareness to such mental health issues as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and depression. Blue Monday also serves as a good reminder for people to think about and take action on simple lifestyle changes that could improve their mental health (Blue Monday Survival Guide, CAMH, 2020).

No matter what Blue Monday means to you, remember that someone you encounter could be having a hard time of things. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them, send a message to tell someone you’re thinking of them, or do a small act of kindness. Remember: In a world where you can be anything, be kind. You never know the impact you may have on someone else.

Community Plans for Blue Monday

  • Ste. Rose Health Centre: Will have inspirational quotes posted in their windows and light up windows with blue lights
  • HERO Clubs (Swan River, Roblin, and Dauphin) and Peer 2 Peer Support: Plan to have discussion with Peer 2 Peer Worker and discuss Peer 2 Peer Connections, Blue Monday, and SAD
  • CMHA (Swan River): Information boards to be posted around Swan River at local businesses and grocery stores. CMHA will also do an online promotion of Blue Monday
  • CMHA (Dauphin): Will use a hashtag to connect community organizations and individuals on Blue Monday
