If you are pregnant or have a baby under the age of one, you and your partner/support person are invited to attend the Healthy Baby program. In Prairie Mountain Health, the Healthy Baby Program takes place in 20 communities throughout the region. No advance registration is necessary; you can just drop-in.
Sessions focus on the social, emotional and health needs of pregnant women and families with children under the age of 1 year of age. Topic areas discussed include attachment, breastfeeding, family health and nutrition, infant development and nutrition, mental health, parenting support, relationships and more.
At each session, nuggets of information are shared around nutrition and breastfeeding and parent-infant activities such as songs, lullabies, nursery rhymes, etc. also done to encourage and strengthen nurturing relationships and infant development.
Healthy Baby is an excellent opportunity for those who attend to get to know and socialize with other moms and new parents, which helps reduce the barriers of isolation and loneliness. The program offers support and informal learning opportunities through group sessions, allows those who attend to build confidence and knowledge around health and parenting choices, ask questions about their pregnancy, learn about baby’s growth and development, and parenting tips.
A healthy snack is served at each session and is often made out of the cookbook that participants receive when they attend. Milk coupons for free milk are provided to those who are eligible (eligibility: all pregnant women and those with babies less than 6 months of age). Eligible participants can receive 4L of milk per week, so for a program that runs monthly, participants can receive coupons for up to 16L of milk each month. Participants must be in attendance to receive the coupons. Bus tickets are also available where applicable.
An additional part of the program is the Manitoba Prenatal Benefit, which is a benefit that provides additional financial support to those who are pregnant to assist then in purchasing healthy food and prenatal vitamins during their pregnancy. Eligible participants can begin receiving this benefit in their 2nd trimester. Families with a net income of less than $32,000 are eligible to receive this benefit. The program is provincially funded, learn more by visiting: http://www.gov.mb.ca/healthychild/healthybaby/index.html
