What is Get Better Together (GBT)?

GBT is based on a program model developed by the Patient Education Research Centre at Stanford University. Trained peer leaders guide participants through several activities each week. Peer leaders are people who themselves have health issues and understand the challenges of managing symptoms, medications and health care needs. By the end of the program participants will have tools to help them better manage their ongoing health condition(s).

Who would benefit?GBT2

GBT is suitable for adults living with a wide range of ongoing health conditions and as an added support for:

  • Arthritis
  • Asthma, COPD
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Hepatitis
  • Chronic back pain
  • Stroke
  • Osteoporosis
  • Lupus
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Weight issues
  • Many other illnesses

Can I bring a support person?

You are welcome to bring a friend, family member or other support person with you.

Is there a cost?

There is no cost.  

How long is the program?

Programs are planned for 2 ½ hours per session. There is a session once a week for a total of six weeks. 

Do I have to come each week?GBT4

To get the most of the program, participants should attend most sessions. Participants who attend a minimum of four out of six sessions will receive a certificate of completion

What can I expect at a session?

The sessions will help you build confidence in managing your condition through group support and discussion of the following topics (discussion topics vary from week to week):

  • Differences between acute and chronic conditions
  • Using your mind to manage symptoms
  • Dealing with difficult emotions
  • Introducing physical activity
  • Better breathing techniques
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Managing pain and fatigue
  • Healthy eating
  • Future plans for health care
  • Communication and problem-solving
  • Medication use
  • Making treatment decisions
  • Depression management, positive thinking and guided imagery
  • Working with healthcare
  • Looking back and planning for the future
  • Action plans

Do I have to attend a program in person?

GBT is also available online.  Participants can join from any computer with internet connection.  Interactive sessions are posted each week for six weeks.  Log on two or three times a week for a total of about two hours per week.  For more information about the online program, go to http://wellnessinstitute.ca/gbt, or to register, go directly to https://wellnessinstitute.ca/bcbh/.
